The original building of the new library of Yangpu District has been in good condition for more than 80 years
.
The building is located in the West and faces east
.
The main part of the building is two-story and part of it is three-story

The design method adopts the mixed style of modern architecture and traditional Chinese architecture

The front of the gatehouse is a three hole gate, surrounded by imitation stone watchpost railings, and the roof is a double eaves
.
After renovation and expansion, the top gate tower and glazed tiles will be reopened to the public in 2018
.
It covers an area of about 15000 square meters, including about 4000 square meters for renovation and more than 10000 square meters for expansion
.
There are 692 reading seats in the new library, which can accommodate up to 800 readers at the same time
.
At present, the library has formed more than 10 brand activities, such as “book world” online book borrowing, “good reading voice” audio reading, “my little study” children’s reading, etc., to promote nationwide reading
.
In addition, “ar intelligent interactive guide” is also launched, which takes the scene in the library and the real-time position of readers as the reference point, integrates ar real-time guide navigation, AR panoramic scanning and other functions, integrates “architecture and technology”, and displays the architectural beauty of the library for readers through the presentation form of virtual image and real world interaction

At the same time, a “modern municipal literature theme museum” is specially set up in the museum to highlight the cultural heritage of Yangpu, open the journey of public readers’ cognition and identification of the local cultural community, seek the root of nostalgia, and create a landmark with connotation, quality and temperature for the integration of culture and tourism

The construction of the library started in September 1934
.
Dong Dayou, a famous architect, hoped to break through the shackles of European and American architecture and find a way out for Chinese modern architecture from traditional architecture
.
The exterior design of the museum adopts the “mixed style of modern architecture and Chinese architecture”, which organically integrates Chinese and Western architectural elements
.
The top gate of the library is covered with yellow glazed tiles, and the rest is ornately decorated
.
The platform is surrounded by stone railings, which fully reflects the characteristics of Chinese architecture
.
A large platform is set in front of the gate, and flagpoles are erected on both sides in front of the platform to strengthen the view
.
At that time, the library was divided into two floors: the first floor was the reading room and the library, and the second floor was the exhibition room, the borrowing room and the catalogue room
.
If the bookshelves are fully arranged according to the design, the collection of books can reach 400000; if the readers are fully occupied, each reading room can accommodate 150 people
.
The maintenance and repair of the building started in 2015, and the library was completed and opened on October 1, 2018
.
After the renovation, the layout of the library was expanded from “Gong” to “Jing”, which was originally conceived by Dong Dayou
.
Dong Dayou’s design manuscript repair team conducted rigorous and meticulous research on the original interior decoration of the building, followed the principle of repairing the old as before, continued to use the original components well preserved, and faithfully reproduced the original components according to historical data
.
For example, the styles of chandeliers and windows, and even the copper rings and decorations on doors, are copied and installed according to the old photos
.
The external facade of the new building can be distinguished from the original building by different patterns
.
While faithful to textual research, the renovation project also embeds some decorative elements representing the contemporary understanding of the library
.
For example, up the stairs on one side of the niche to the second floor, the wall is decorated with two seal characters – “Jing” and “Si”, which are composed of brush heads, showing a strong flavor of books
.
From the first floor to the second floor, there is a word “Si” on the wall at the corner of the stairs
.
The red clay tile floor of the first floor lobby is more than 80 years old
.
In order to maximize the use of space, the air conditioning and fire fighting pipes in the new hall are still laid underground
.
Before entering the construction site, the repair workers mark and take photos of each brick above, then remove and polish them one by one, and finally clean and repair them
.
After the underground pipeline is laid, the red clay bricks are re paved
.
The whole process is extremely complicated
