Architectural Design | Tsinghua University Physics Building “Red Brick Dual Core, Spatiotemporal Overlapping”!

The core design concept of the project is to face the site conditions of the “Red Zone” cultural protection zone in the northwest of Tsinghua University campus, which has a height limit of 18 meters for Grade IV cultural protection, a land area of 152m × 68m, and needs to accommodate 42000 square meters for teaching and research functions.

The physics laboratory has extreme requirements for stability/electromagnetic shielding/independent grounding.

Li Yinong Studio aims to achieve the dual goals of “cultural heritage continuity” and “technical construction”.

It responds to the traditional campus red brick with a double-layer skin of red brick colonnade and glass curtain wall, meets the special process requirements of physics with a vertical partition of “above ground teaching office – underground research experiment”, and replicates the red brick colonnade of the old science museum and transplant the academician wall of the principle science building on the first floor of the atrium, making the old science museum, science building, and new The third generation of the Physics Building achieves a century long dialogue of “three generations living together” in the same space.
